In today’s training, I share how to overcome fear of selling in network marketing.

This training is inspired from the question I got from Grace, Grace is a network marketing champ and asked, “AOC sir, I’m new to network marketing and the first 2 people I showed my products and opportunity to fully shot me down. I was so let down and now, I’m having a hard time showing my business to anyone else out of fear. How do I overcome fear of selling in network marketing?”

Are you like Grace?
Every rejection feels like a sign of failure – You usually feel like rejections are a sign that you’re not good at your network marketing business or that your product or service isn’t good enough.
You also feel this way even when prospects are merely unresponsive or defer on buying or joining you.
You take days to recover from it – Whenever a lead doesn’t want to take your offer, it’s at the back of your mind for more than a day.
It’s possible you even replay the interaction to see what you could have said or done to close the sale.
You might even feel some bitterness towards the person or sales in general.
And you have been thinking, how do I overcome fear of selling in network marketing?

Do you know what so many network marketers dread of the most when it comes to network marketing? Selling!
Yes, we are not salespeople but consultants.
That’s absolutely true but if you don’t sell, are you in business?
No sir!
I’ve got a lot of personal experience with rejection and it took me a long time, listening and applying what my mentors taught me, to find a way to get past that massive fear of rejection that is so prevalent in the network marketing industry which could lead to fear of selling.
If you come with the overall philosophy or mindset that you absolutely must get this certain prospect enrolled, it breeds fear.
And people can smell that fear because you will be so attached to the outcome.
And do you what? It is that attachment that brings the fear cos it creates a breeding ground for it!
Get this straight up: Your job in network marketing is not to enroll someone, it is simple to expose your opportunity to people to see it and for you to understand it and that’s all!
They are going to make the decision to join or not and if you’ve provided on opportunity for them to see and understand it, you’ve done your job.
All good network marketing companies have tools that do the selling part for you to help eliminate the fear of selling, your job is to simple show people those tools.
Disassociate yourself from the outcome, use the tools your company provides you, practice how you set up your network marketing opportunity, and focus your energy on getting those tools in front of people realizing that they are going to make the decision and either way, it doesn’t matter because it’s a number game.
Another cause of this is that your focus is on the possible rejection – You have one major question at the back of your mind: “What if they say no?”
You’re not thinking about more critical concerns, such as: Is the prospect a good match for your target market? What can you help them with? Why should they choose you over other businesses that might have cheaper offers? These are the questions that can help you deal with the fear of selling in network marketing.
If any of the scenario I have painted above seem familiar, then fear of selling in network marketing plays a major part in preventing you from becoming better and more confident in this industry.

Here are what you can do to lessen or eliminate this fear:
1. LIST OUT YOUR FEARS OF SELLING

Get familiar with your fear of selling.
List everything that you think will go wrong during your sales attempts—no matter how silly or unlikely.
Then, for each item, ask yourself: How likely is it to happen? What are the real-life consequences if this were to happen? If I were the type of person who wasn’t afraid of this, how would I act? Pay attention to your answer to the second question. This will give you clues on what you need to do to get past each fear.
You can work on how to handle rejection in sales better, if you have a clear perspective on your fear and what you should be aiming for instead.
For example, you could be afraid that you’ll never be able to make any sales at all. Go through each of the suggested questions:
How Likely Is It to Happen? – If you’ve made sales before, regardless of whether it’s in this business or a previous venture, then it’s unlikely that you’ll never make another sale again.
Closing sales is also more than just getting paid, it’s also about helping people make a decision.
Have you ever changed someone’s mind? Have you ever got other people to care about things they previously didn’t care about?
If you’ve been able to do these things, then you are capable of making at least a few more sales, regardless of how many rejections you get.
What Are the Real-Life Consequences if This Were to Happen? – Consider what it would mean if you never make a sale again.
Some worst-case scenarios might include getting a job that doesn’t involve sales at all, hiring a salesperson for your business, or getting outside help to improve your sales technique.
When you follow through on your fears and imagine the worst-case consequences, you’ll see that they’re not nearly as catastrophic as you imagine.
If I Were the Type of Person Who Wasn’t Afraid of This, How Would I Act? – Think about the type of person you’d be if you didn’t have this fear.
Include everything from what you’ll be feeling internally, how you’ll carry yourself, and what you’ll do to prepare for the sales task.
Note also how your body responds to the idea of sales.
For example, if you get sweaty and feel butterflies in your stomach when trying to make a sale, think about how you’ll react instead if you weren’t afraid.
While this won’t eliminate your fear responses, you’ll at least have an idea about what your next action should be and how you should carry yourself despite your fear.
Feel free to do this exercise regularly, or before you’re about to attempt a sales-related task, whether it’s a call, a face-to-face appointment, or writing sales copy.

2. ACCEPT THAT “NO” IS NORMAL
Remember that only 25-percent of leads become sales.
In the most competitive industries, the percentage is even smaller.
Regardless of what network marketing business you run, you’re likely to get more rejections than closes.
Consider if your fear of rejection is stronger than your desire to run your own business and make your dream counts!
3. STOP SELLING AND START BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS.
You’ll never sell anything unless you’re willing to get to know the person you’re selling to.
This applies just as much to the person with the short sales cycle as to the person selling the long, 5-year contract.
It’s all about relationships.
And this business is a relationship business. You get what I mean?
4. SHIFT YOUR PERSPECTIVE.

How would it feel to think of yourself as “sharing information” about what you do?
Or “showing benefits” or “sharing your passion?”
If you feel uncomfortable or anxious about “selling”- find a way to shift your perspective to one of sharing information rather than “convincing someone to buy.”

5. DETACH FROM HOW THE OUTCOME SHOWS UP.
Very often, we get really attached to “making the sale” or having a situation turn out a certain way.
Instead, why not focus on efforts “I will give a great, enthusiastic, and passionate presentation” rather than outcome: “They will buy X number of this.”
Very often, if you stay focused on the effort – doing a great job – the outcome turns out better than you ever imagined.
6. DON’T SELL A PRODUCT, SELL A TRANSFORMATION
At a time, I was as well fearing how to sell too.
So I told myself, scrab this buy, buy this so and so products, why not sell experience, or say transformation!
When I focus on the transformation instead of the product, selling becomes a lot easier — and a lot less terrifying for me.
When we’re selling a product, a lot of times we get caught up in the features.
Look at all these bla bla bla! There’s five modules, and 26 videos, and 10 worksheets, and a community, and OH MY GOSH LOOK AT ALL THESE THINGS YOU GET!!
And I totally get it.
We spend so much time creating these products, of course we want to shout everything our customers are getting from the rooftops!
But the reality is, our customers don’t really care if there’s five videos or fifty videos.
They don’t care about the product. They care about what will happen as a result of using the product.
And when we focus on the transformation — how the product will take them from where they are to where they want to be?
It completely changes the game.
When we truly believe in our product, we also believe in the transformation — all we need to do is get our customers to believe in it too.
When we sell a transformation, selling isn’t so scary anymore.
We’re not selling a product. We’re selling a way to change our prospects’ lives for the better.
And what’s so scary about that?
7. DON’T PREJUDGE YOUR PROSPECTS

“This product is really expensive… I can’t ask my prospects to pay this much! They can’t afford it!”
Sound familiar?
I think we’ve all wrestled with this fear at one time or another.
We worry that whatever we’re selling — whether it’s five dollars or 50 dollars or 500 dollars — is too much of an investment for our prospects.
And that by asking them to make that investment, we’ll make them feel bad, turn them off, or push them away.
But here’s the thing: we have no idea what kind of financial situation our prospects are.
Maybe they can afford it; maybe they can’t.
But either way, we have to remember: all we’re doing is presenting them with the choice to buy.
We’re not saying, “You HAVE to buy this.” We’re saying, “If you WANT to buy this, here’s your opportunity.”
We’re not forcing their hand in any way.
When we stop making assumptions about our prospects and what they can and can’t afford — and remember that we’re not forcing them to do anything — it becomes easier to present them with a sales opportunity.

Get better at selling
At the end of the day, sales is a practiced skill and not an inborn talent.
Even if you’re shy, nervous, or don’t know where to start, you can practice to become better.
And everyone can be better.
Every entrepreneur, creative, or consultant can find ways to improve their sales skills, even if their business is already profitable.
You can overcome your fear of selling, and learn to excel at sales.
