Over the last few years, I’ve spent tens of thousands of hours working with hundreds of different marketers most importantly, network marketers.
When you spend this much time with people in a certain role, one of the more interesting things you can do is try to determine the skills that make someone effective in that role.
This is particularly interesting for the field of marketing simply because marketing has changed so much in the last decade.
While being an effective marketer exhibits a wide variety of skills, in today’s post, I’ve identified the marketing skills that really stand out today to be an efficient marketer.
1. KNOW YOUR MARKET
The success of any marketer depends on its ability to understand his target market.
The marketer who can understand and effectively articulate what customers and competitors are doing has a foundational marketing skill.
Becoming the voice of the customer is particularly valuable to your business.
Marketers who can collect both quantitative and qualitative data about customers and present that data in a strategic manner are very effective.
One other point – this isn’t just about gathering data via surveys.
Direct conversations with customers are critical to this effort and usually more valuable than survey data.
2. BECOME A STORYTELLER
It’s harder than ever to get a customer’s attention.
That’s why marketers such as Seth Godin believe that storytelling is critical to successful marketing.
Marketers most importantly, network marketers must be good storytellers for the simple reason that customers identify with compelling stories more than anything else.
Most successful marketing campaigns tell a story that customers identify with on an emotional level.
Marketers who can tell great stories to customers via a variety of marketing campaigns are indispensable in a world where attracting a customer’s attention can be challenging.
3. NEVER STOP LEARNING
The field of marketing is changing at a rapid pace thanks to dynamics like the internet and the changing customer behavior.
This means that marketers have to learn faster than ever.
Something as simple as learning has become an essential marketing skill.
Fortunately, there’s a wealth of information available online that can help marketers learn about new marketing trends.
Many of the world’s best marketers are actively blogging and tweeting the latest data and information.
LinkedIn is another powerful tool for acquiring marketing knowledge.
Examples of topics to learn about now include social media, content marketing, big data, WhatsApp marketing and mobile marketing.
Craig Rosenberg, puts the importance of continuous learning this way, “Self-educate as much as you can. The marketing you learn in school or in books is much different than how marketing actually works. You should read blogs, white papers, attend webinars, go to online and offline training… Even CMO’s spend a lot of time self-educating on marketing. You can never know enough.”
You need to keep educating yourself… Personal development is critical to becoming an effective marketer.
If you don’t get yourself updated, you’d be outdated.
Keep learning… Keep updating yourself and you will definitely grow and thereby becomes effective.
4. USE PROVEN TIME-SAVING TRICKS.
There are a few general productivity hacks that can save you lots of time – time that you can spend doing tasks that will make the biggest impact on your goals. Here are some of the best:
Limit interruptions. Keep your email inbox closed when cranking on a big project.
Only check it a few times a day instead of every ten seconds (you know you’re guilty of it).
Cut meeting length. If you have 1-hour meetings on your calendar, cut them to 1/2 hour.
Cut 1/2 hour meetings to fifteen minutes. Faster meetings are more productive meetings, and they’ll get you back to your desk more quickly.
Wear headphones. Wear them even if you don’t listen to music.
This way people will be more hesitant to interrupt you if they can visibly tell you’re in the zone.
Schedule fake meetings. If you see a four-hour free block of time later in the week, literally block that time in your calendar so you can crank away on work.
Better yet, instead of creating one solid four-hour block, create four one-hour blocks so people don’t see through your strategy and book time with you anyway.
Sign off from your instant messaging client. Or make yourself invisible or mark yourself as “busy” to keep people from bothering you.
5. THE WIIFM CONCEPT
You may or may not be familiar with the concept of WIIFM.
WIIFM stands for What’s In It For Me?
What that means is that no matter what you are selling (product, service, etc), it doesn’t matter how wonderful those products and services are and how amazing you are are as a business owner.
All that matters is that you have the ability to solve the problem that your target audience member is experiencing at that particular moment.
The way that you phrase your marketing content has a tremendous impact on how that target audience member reacts to what he or she is reading.
It is far more important to give the target audience what they need than to satisfy your own needs.
Give them what they want and not what your needs are.
Although there is no doubt that your content marketing strategy is vitally important to your business, your content itself must be precise and effective and it must reach its target each and every time.
Of course, the driving force in that situation is your content marketing strategy, which is your road map when it comes to knowing which content you need to write in order to achieve the results that you wish to achieve.
When it comes to your business’ content marketing strategy, of course, it must start with well-written, customized content.
That content must hold a great deal of value and it must be educational for anyone who reads it.
It is very important for you to understand here that your content is a tool that will enable you to get what you want for your business and thereby making you to become an effective marketer.
